Planning tips for regional routes
Luggage
Use Yamato or Sagawa courier at Narita Airport to send your heavy bags ahead to your hotel or ryokan (next-day delivery). Pack a change of clothes in your carry-on for the first day.
See luggage guide →Choosing your first night
Arriving at Narita in the morning or midday, you can generally reach regional destinations by 16:00–18:00. Check check-in times and allow buffer for travel.
Itinerary patterns
Consider "region first, Tokyo last" — if your return flight departs from Tokyo, spend the first half of your trip in regional areas and the last few nights in Tokyo.
FAQ
Can I go directly from Narita to somewhere other than Tokyo?
Yes. Hakone (~3 hrs), Nikko (~3.5–4 hrs), Mt. Fuji / Kawaguchiko (~3.5–4 hrs), and Boso (~35 min to Chiba, up to 2.5 hrs to southern Boso) are all reachable directly from Narita.
Are there any places reachable from Narita without going through Tokyo?
Chiba and the Boso Peninsula can be reached via the JR Sobu Line without passing through central Tokyo. Other destinations pass through Tokyo stations but don't require an overnight stay there.
Can I spend my first night outside Tokyo after arriving at Narita?
Yes. Arriving in the morning or midday, you can reach Hakone, Nikko, Mt. Fuji, or Boso by 16:00–18:00. Sending heavy luggage by courier makes the journey much more comfortable.
